FAQ

How Much Should I Tip?
The percentage is really up to you. General tipping guidelines are:
-
20% or more for excellent service (ever given 100% or more)?
-
If you frequent a place, higher tips may get you better service
-
If you are ones who leave big messes, or have little children who leave big messes, giving your server a little extra is always appreciated
-
If you stay a long time at your table, take into consideration your tip for time - not just food
-
-
15% for solid service (also considered average or OK service)
-
10% for bad service
-
Many times, it’s not just your server counting on tips. There are food runners, bussers, and bartenders.

Do I Tip on the Amount Before or After Tax?
Great question! Again, there's really no hard and fast rule. Technically, you can tip on the pre-tax amount. If you do the math (I know, argh!), you'll find that it's not a big difference either way, so it's up to you. (On a $50 pre-tax bill, tipping 20% pre-tax is a $10 tip. If your sales tax is 8.5%, that adds $4.25 to the bill, making it $54.25. That only increases the tip from $10 to $10.85).
So it's OK to tip on the amount before taxes, and it's entirely up to you which way you do it.
Let the service you get be your ultimate guide.
What if I’m using a coupon?
If you are using a coupon or discount, calculate the tip based on how much you would have paid without it. You don’t want to punish the server for the restaurant giving you a discount. The server is still doing the full amount of work.
What should I look for when deciding how much to tip?
Judge the service alone:
-
If the food wasn’t good, or the prices were high, these aren’t the fault of your server
The service itself should be judged on:
-
Was your server's demeanor courteous and professional?
-
Did the food match your order?
-
Was the food hot and fresh from the kitchen?
-
Was the server attentive to your needs?
-
Did they fill your drinks?
-
Did they come by and ask if you needed anything?
-
Did they clear your dishes in a timely manner?
-
Did they get your check and have your payment processed in a timely manner?
-
If the server was kind and attentive yet service wasn’t quite stellar, consider these things:
-
Was the restaurant busy?
-
Did the restaurant seem to be understaffed?
-
Was it the server’s issue or poor management?
-
If there was a mistake in your order, did the server work hard to fix it?
-
Does your server seem new?
-
Serving takes practice, so be kind. You were new at your job once too.
